Jahrhundert erfährt der Begriff "Geist" im Zusammenhang mit dem Zurücktreten des metaphysischen und transzendental-reflexiven Denkens zugunsten der positivistischen Methode eine bis heute wirksame Verengung seiner Bedeutung: Er bezeichnet lediglich noch das, was mit dem Denkvermögen und Bewusstsein des einzelnen Menschen zusammenhängt. In zahlreichen Ableitungen und Begriffszusammensetzungen wie "Geistesblitz", "Geistesgegenwart", "geistreich" etc. kommt dies zum Ausdruck. Doch das war nicht immer so. Bereits ein Blick zurück in die Geschichte der deutschen Sprache zeigt, dass ursprünglich zwei Bedeutungsstränge parallel liefen. Neben dem eben genannten wurde der Begriff "Geist" auch im Sinne von "überirdisches Wesen", "Gespenst" benutzt. Noch viel umfangreicher und differenzierter wird sein Bedeutungsgehalt, zieht man Ausschnitte aus der Religions- und Philosophiegeschichte hinzu. Den Kern dieser Arbeit bildet hierbei der in der Gnosis benutzte "Pneuma"-Begriff, der anhand des wahrscheinlich aus dem 3. nachchristlichen Jahrhundert stammenden, vermutlich ägyptischen Textes "Das Wesen der Archonten" aus dem Codex II von Nag Hammadi veranschaulicht und als exemplarisch für das gnostische Denken dargestellt werden soll. Darüber hinaus lassen sich an diesem Text auch andere für die Gnosis wesentliche Bereiche entwickeln: der Dualismus, die Kosmogonie, die Anthropogonie und Anthropologie, die Soteriologie und schlie lich die Eschatologie. Anschlie end zeigt ein Blick zurück in die römische und griechische Antike die Wurzeln des "Pneuma"-Begriffs auf und eine Darstellung der semantischen Vielfalt im Neuen Testament sowie im frühen Christentum rundet die Untersuchung ab.
