Roland G. Aranjo argues that politics should be understood not merely as the struggle for power, the management of interests, or the administration of government, but as the stewardship of the common conditions of life: the social, institutional, ecological, economic, technological, cultural, legal, administrative, and constitutional conditions that make human dignity, cooperation, lawful contestation, repair, and self-government possible.

Against the view that power is something to be possessed, this book develops a theory of political power as common trust. Public authority, civic responsibility, markets, institutions, technology, law, administration, and constitutional order are judged by whether they preserve, repair, renew, and transmit the conditions on which common life depends.

Drawing from classical political thought, constitutional theory, public administration, political economy, environmental ethics, technology governance, and international relations, Aranjo proposes a stewardship standard for legitimate power: authority, accountability, capability, truthfulness, restraint, dignity, repair, and continuity.
