Allein ihre nahezu unbegrenzte Vielfalt und Anpassungsfahigkeit macht diese StofTe unentbehrlich. Dazu kommt in einer Zeit zunehmender Energieverknappung der Vorteil, daB zu ihrer Herstellung im Verhaltnis zu anderen WerkstofTen viel weniger Energie ben6tigt wird und daB ihr Einsatz im Gebrauch meistens ebenfalls Ener- gie sparen hilft. Ais Beispiel daftir soli en nur die warmedammenden Bau- stofTe und die gewichtseinsparenden KunststofTe im Fahrzeugbau er- wahnt werden. 1m Gegensatz zu der tiberragenden Bedeutung der Polymerchemie in der Praxis und im Berufsleben steht die noch immer recht stiefmtitter- liche Behandlung dieses Fachgebietes in der Ausbildung. Ein groBer Teil der ins Berufsleben hinaustretenden, fertig ausgebildeten Chemiker hat kein Fach Makromolekulare Chemie oder Polymerchemie studiert. Er wird erst an seiner Arbeitsstatte "angelernt". Diesem Personenkreis und' den Chemiestudenten und Chemotechnikern, die keine schulische Gele- genheit hatten, sich tiber die Besonderheiten der Polymeren in Herstel- lung, Charakterisierung und Eigenschaften zu informieren, soli das vor- liegende Taschenbuch eine erste Orientierungshilfe bieten. Es sollte aller- dings aufgrund seines beschrankten Umfangs nicht als Lehrbuch im Kleinformat betrachtet werden.
