Portrayal of Conflict and Insurgency in Literature from Kashmir studies the turbulent times of the 1990s insurgency and militancy in the Kashmir Valley. This was a seminal event in the chequered history of the region as it completely changed the character of the Kashmir issue. The Kashmir dispute, till the 1990s, was an issue between the two nation-states of India and Pakistan, with the world keeping an eye on it for its geopolitical ramifications. However in the 1990s, this changed, and the common Kashmiri populace found itself amidst a political and social conflict for the first time since independence. Both the Muslims and the Pandits were affected and suffered terrible consequences arising out of the violent times of the insurgency/militancy.
Numerous works of literature in English have emerged from the first-hand accounts of these troubled times by authors who grew up in Kashmir.
These are presented in both fictional and non-fictional forms, highlighting the true experiences of the masses. The current book attempts to understand the nature of the insurgency/militancy in Kashmir by analysing these literary texts.
