Este libro presenta, de alguna forma, ensayos sobre los escritores fundamentales que le dieron carácter al movimiento contracultural norteamericano. Cada uno de ellos, a su manera, denunció la hipocresía de un sueño imaginado por una sociedad cercada sobre sí misma. Quizá Walt Whitman fue el único que encontró, en épocas remotas, hojas de hierba en caminos nunca antes transitados. Por eso mismo, la inclusión del apartado sobre el ruiseñor de Samuel Taylor Coleridge no tiene por qué resultar azarosa. Este poeta inglés, junto con William Blake y otros tantos, fue uno de los precursores en cuanto a esclarecer el proceso específico de dominación: el de una racionalidad sistémica, científica o civilizada. Y al igual que John Fante, Jack Kerouac y Jerome David Salinger, Coleridge fue un bárbaro con espíritu infantil. La pérdida, para todos ellos, es una constante: el sueño es irrealizable, el crecimiento inevitable, el control asecha y corroe en las fábricas, en las escuelas, en las universidades. Todos ellos, además, escribieron para ser leídos y comprendidos Porque a pesar de todo abrazaron a su época y a su gente. Entendieron, rápidamente, que el cambio de una forma de pensar sólo es posible a través de una decisión que se hace visible en la experiencia. Quizá Carlyle, en De los héroes y sobre su culto, se confundió al hablar sobre la pérdida de la figura heroica de los poetas. O malentendió su destino: aun hoy, hay batallas que se despliegan a pesar de la evidente victoria del enemigo. De no haber sido de esta forma, no entenderíamos por qué la obra de John Fante inquietó a tantos editores, siendo primero silenciada y sólo reproducida en el exilio del momento de su producción; de la mismo modo que no entenderíamos el específico y prolongado trabajo ideológico que se ejerció sobre los Beats.
