This book gives an extensive over view on the material used for the construction of power generation plants, its evolution, types and grades, with comparison for their chemical, mechanical, creep and corrosion resistance. On the other hand, this book focusing also on steel P91 which is known for its excellent high-temperature properties. P91 steel always acts as one of the best material selection for the most critical power boiler components. The achievement of optimum weld metal properties for steel P91 within the course of its extensive applications in power plants has often caused concern. In the present work, modified 9Cr-1Mo steel (P91) were welded using different levels of heat inputs. Three different conditions of heat treatments were employed; as welded, subcritical post-weld heat treatment and normalizing/tempering treatment. Microstructure was evaluated by optical, scanning electron microscopes, X-ray diffraction and Ferrite-scope measurement. Hardness, tensile, impact toughness, stress rupture properties and stress corrosion cracking were evaluated. The best combination of mechanical and corrosion properties with a significant increase of about 90% in time to rupture was obtained at specific heat input and heat treatment condition. Specific heat input and heat treatment combination given the smallest proportion of δ-ferrite in the weld area with great homogeneity of the microstructure were determined. This combination also leads to the absence of the soft over tempered area in the heat affected zone which act as the normal source of failure during services, due to its un-preferred properties. Five chapters, 165 pages.
