Practical AI with Google Apps Script: Build Responsible AI Tools Inside Google Workspace
Artificial Intelligence is no longer experimental - it's already embedded in how we work, teach, and collaborate. But most AI resources focus on flashy demos, abstract theory, or autonomous systems that simply don't belong in real organizational environments.
This book takes a different approach.
Practical AI with Google Apps Script is a hands-on, system-level guide to building safe, trustworthy, and production-ready AI tools directly inside Google Workspace using Google Apps Script.
Instead of building standalone AI apps that ignore permissions, governance, and accountability, you'll learn how to design AI that works where people already work - inside Google Docs, Sheets, Forms, Drive, and Gmail - without breaking trust.
What This Book Teaches YouThis book goes far beyond basic AI API calls. You'll learn how to:
- Integrate AI responsibly into Google Docs and Sheets
- Build AI sidebars, helpers, and assistants using Apps Script
- Design AI workflows that support humans instead of replacing them
- Use Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) safely with Google Drive
- Enforce validation, structured outputs, and guardrails
- Handle errors, retries, quotas, and performance limits
- Scale AI tools across teams and institutions
- Maintain and evolve AI systems over time
Every example is grounded in real constraints: security reviews, IT policies, academic integrity, performance limits, and long-term maintenance.
A Human-Centered AI PhilosophyThroughout the book, a clear principle is enforced:
AI informs. Code decides. Humans approve.
You'll learn how to:
- Prevent silent automation
- Avoid AI hallucinations becoming decisions
- Keep humans in the loop at every critical step
- Build transparency directly into the user experience
This makes the book especially valuable for educators, developers, and organizations that need AI tools they can defend, explain, and trust.
Real Projects, Not Toy ExamplesYou'll build complete, reusable systems such as:
- AI assistants inside Google Docs
- AI-powered spreadsheet analysis tools
- Forms → AI → workflow automation pipelines
- Drive-based knowledge bots using RAG
- AI quality and document cleanup tools
- Insight dashboards that explain data instead of altering it
Each project includes architecture explanations, design decisions, and safety considerations - not just code.
