Now in its Fourth Edition, this classic textbook has grown up alongside the newspaper industry. Today, as ever, it provides students of newspaper journalism with a toolkit for gathering news and filling ever-increasing space with first-rate copy for print and online. Informed by over half a century′s professional experience and fully revised to give a nuanced account of the skills required in an online environment, this book is an essential companion for your journalism degree and beyond.

David Spark started reporting in 1953 at the Lancaster Guardian and transferred in 1955 to The Northern Echo, Darlington, where he soon became a sub-editor. Then, in 1959, he was ′John North′, the Echo′s travelling feature writer, visiting towns and villages throughout North-East England. He later took up leader writing and was appointed assistant editor in 1965. In 1967 he transferred, as leader and feature writer, to the London office of Westminster Press Provincial Newspapers, eventually becoming assistant London editor. He turned freelance when the office closed in 1986, writing features for newspapers at home and abroad, notably the Financial Times. Since 1986 he has edited the newsletter of the Commonwealth Journalists Association, which records the struggles of journalists throughout the Commonwealth to report despite poverty and political pressures.
