About The Book

Vor 20 Jahren bereits wurde an der Bezirksarztekammer Nord- wurttemberg eine Studienkommission ins Leben gerufen, die sich "Prospektive Untersuchungen uber die Medizin im Jahre 2000" zum Thema macht. In den letzten Jahren konnte aus der Arbeit dieser Kommission eine Reihe von Publikationen vorgelegt wer- den, die das Interesse einer breiten Offentlichkeit fanden, so - urn nur einige Beispiele zu nennen -: Computer veriindern die Medizin (1969), Entwicklung moderner Medizin (1971), Medizinische Dienste im Wandel (1975), Medizinische Oko!ogie (1979), EfJektivitiit und Ejfizienz in der Medizin (1981), Gesundheits- politik (1984). Die vorliegende Publikation stutzt sich auf Referate, die in ei- nem interdisziplinaren Kolloquium in den Jahren 1983 bis 1986 am Institut fUr Geschichte der Medizin der Universitat Heidel- berg unter dem Thema "Probleme einer praventiven Medizin" ge- halten wurden. Die "praventive Medizin" - seit Jahrtausenden ein Thema der Heilkunde, seit hundert Jahren aber mehr und mehr vergessen - ist in den letzten Jahren auffallend in den Mit- telpunkt des offentlichen Interesses geriickt. 1m Zeitalter der be- drohlich anwachsenden chronischen Krankheiten hat sich auch die naturwissenschaftlich orientierte Medizin mit vollem Ernst wieder der Problematik der Vorbeugung und der Nachbehand- lung zugewandt. Die Arztekammer begriiBt eine Veroffentlichung, in der neb en historischen und zeitkritischen Analysen der Medizin auch die Vertreter benachbarter Fachbereiche zu Worte kamen; sie dankt vor aHem den Studenten verschiedener Fakultaten fUr das Inter- esse an dieser akademischen Veranstaltung und wunscht der Pu- blikation ein weites Echo.
