Zunächst gilt es die Thematik unter Betrachtung der Historie von Logtik einzugrenzen und zu definieren. Was die Theorie anbelangt so lässt sich konstatieren, dass es sich bei Fragestel-lungen, die mit dem Management und dem Controlling von Supply Chains befasst sind entgegen früherer Vermutungen nicht blo um neue aber ebenso wieder verschwindende "Buzzwords" handelt. Vielmehr hat man es mit einer "dynamischen Disziplin" zu tun, was v.a. durch die gro e Anzahl der in den vergan-genen Jahren erschienen Publikationen deutlich wird. Die unternehmerische Praxis ist zahlreichen Veränderungstreibern ausgesetzt, welche die entsprechenden Rahmenbedingungen immer komplexer und dynamischer werden lassen. Exemplarisch seien hier die Stichworte wie der Wechsel vom Verkäufermarkt hin zum Käufermarkt und damit verbundene, wachsende Kundenanforderungen, kürzer werdende Produktlebenszyklen, zunehmende Globalisierung, Wettbewerbsverschärfung sowie rasante Technologieentwicklungen und Informationsverfügbarkeit. Somit werden für die Logistik und dem Management und Controlling von Supply Chains immer neue, komplexere Aufgaben definiert, die sich aus der Bezugnahme von zunehmendem unternehmerischem Druck ergeben, Kostensenkungs-, Gewinn- und Wachstumspotenziale zu erschlie en. Der innovative Grundgedanke, dies durch Gestaltung und Koordination der unternehmensübergreifenden Wertschöpfungskette zu erreichen hat in den vergangenen Jahren auch in der Praxis zunehmend Betrachtung gefunden.
