The practice of giving thanks to God has its roots in the Old Testament, where the consecration of bread and shared meals with meat, bread, and wine were accompanied by prayers and psalms of praise, especially during the time of King David. These celebrations, known as todah, emphasized the importance of gratitude as an essential part of the faith and life of the people of Israel.

In the New Testament, this tradition of gratitude reached its fullness at the Last Supper of Jesus. In giving thanks -from the Greek eucharistein, meaning thanksgiving- He instituted the Eucharist, the supreme act of gratitude to God that unites us with salvation through His passion, death, and resurrection. Thus, gratitude became a spiritual path of union with Christ and of recognizing His gifts.
