It is well-known that prehistoric archaeo¬logy is as vital to a proper understanding of the steps and processes of human progress as ontogeny is to philogeny. And the place of India in human culture being once completely compre¬hended, prehistoric archaeology of India becomes fraught with the utmost interest. “A glance at the map shows India as the heart of the old world; in fact, the ideas that emanated from India, the elements of culture that matured there, had been derived from outside, had been recast and transformed over and over again by an indescribably fertile imagination, sometimes indeed worked up even to extravagance, and in all these stages given out again broadcast to the world. Thus as in historic times, so possibly in prehistoric times India was in touch with phase after phase of the dominant cultures of the world. What is more, with the motto of “live and let live” India is still dragging on primitive ele¬ments from the remotest prehistoric times even in the most cultured households which live and move in latest thoughts whether spiritually evolved within herself or materially imported from the West.

Dr. Panchanan Mitra (Bengali), (1892 – 1936) was the first professor of anthropology in India. He was among the first Indians to study at Yale University and conducted several anthropological expeditions in India and abroad. He was the head of the Department of Anthropology of the University of Calcutta and is most known for his works Prehistoric India (1923), History of American Anthropology (1930) and Indo-Poly-nesian Memories (1933). He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland and today the Asiatic Society awards an annual ‘Panchanan Mitra Memorial Lectureship’ for outstanding contributions to anthropology. He was lecturer in anthropology, ancient Indian history and culture, Calcutta University. He was also curator in Indian Museum and Fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute.
