From a Literary Critic here known with anonymity as D.B.- "It all climaxes when Dan Matthews shouts at Miss Hubbard, "Where am I to go?" Clearly, this frantic outburst is a shared call from all of the major characters in "Principle Jones". From this point on tragedy is inevitable. This novel richly presents why this is true given the background, questioning, and behavior therein, even from the briefly mentioned "Boots", the hired building security guard. On the other hand questions and conflicts are driven by immature impulses. Readers can identify with understanding and relief- those developmental years. Another, darker area probes adult guilt and resignation, or just plain denial. All of this is crafted one layer at a time. This not only keeps the reader moving to the next chapter but is a reminder that revelation comes a bit at a time, not in bursts of light- because the truth often holds out important pieces, misguiding some to great mistakes. This novel has some important strengths. The flow of the plot and the depiction of characters flow carefully together revealing an intelligent control of storytelling. The setting, especially that of the school's interior, is clearly mapped for the reader. The day-to-day tedium of teaching and administering is very accurate, providing those with like experience the feeling of recognition. But almost any work would be hollow unless it has something important to say. "Principle Jones" says important things, and in abundance. It is a work that deserves its ideas to be experienced and discussed. Plot Description: A shooting occurs at a high school in the fictional town of Lieker, known for its strip malls and economic homogeneity. The plot centers around the Metlus family, whose father George works for the Lieker DPW, and the two Metlus children, Ricky and Katie, students at the old Liker Eat High School, now named Grover Cleveland High School. The novel begins with a scene involving Edward West, a teacher at Grover Cleveland High School. Other students play an active role in the novel, including Eric Williams, Dan Hoefstra, and Dan Mathhews. The Assistant Principal of the school, Principal Jones also plays an important role in the work. An author's note and guided reading group questions also accompany the text.
