Es gibt wohl kaum einen sozialwissenschaftlichen Diskurs, der sich in der jtingsten Zeit so rasant globalisiert und die Gemtiter so erregt hat wie die Debat- te urn die Zivilgesellschaft. In der westlichen Welt konnen sowohl die Vertreter als auch die Kritiker des Konzeptes dem linken politischen Spektrum zugerech- 1 net werden, wahrend in Osteuropa und in der Peripherie die Linken und die Liberalen die Initiatoren der Debatte sind. 1m Westen wird das Konzept von Teilen der Linken u.a. mit der Begrtindung abgelehnt, es stelle eine neue Aufla- ge der "liberaldemokratisch-marktwirtschaftlichen Modernisierung"2 dar; in der peripheren Welt entwickelte sich dagegen der Begriff Zivilgesellschaft zu einem Paradigma, mit dem die oppositionellen Krllfte nach dem osteuropliischen Vorbild die autoritliren politischen Strukturen zu tiberwinden versuchen. Angesichts der verschiedenen antagonistischen Positionen scheint den von 3 Bruce Ackerman umrissenen Aufgaben der politischen Theorie, nlimlich grundlegende Probleme zu analysieren und Vorschlllge zu deren LOsung zu unterbreiten, ein weiterer Aspekt hinzugefugt werden zu mtissen, nllmlich die konkreten Bedingungen mit einzubeziehen, unter denen die politische Theorie Anwendung fmdet. Tatsachlich fmden mehrere Debatten tiber die Zivilgesell- schaft mit unterschiedlichen Diagnosen und Losungsvorschlllgen parallel statt. Trotzdem laBt sich eine inhaltliche Interdependenz zwischen diesen Debatten 4 feststellen. Datilber hinaus lihneln sich die defmitorischen Elemente.
