Sie gewinnt in der zunehmend mediatisierten und globalisierten Gesellschaft sogar weiter an Bedeutung. Die Kommunikation unter Akteuren der Politik ist das zentrale Mittel der Kompromiss-, somit der Politikfindung insgesamt. Gleichzeitig ist die Kommunikation den Wählern gegenüber das zentrale Legitimationsinstrument in demokratischen Gesellschaften. Über die Kommunikation im politischen Raum findet der Austausch zwischen Zivilgesellschaft, Parteien, Funktionären und Regierung statt. Die Rückkopplung des Politischen an die Wähler ist das konstituierende Moment von Demokratien, oder, um es mit Ulrich Saxers Worten zu sagen: Kommunikation ist der zentrale Mechanismus von Politik. Doch wird diese politische Kommunikation in einer Welt, in der die Globalisierung Tatsache ist, immer komplizierter. "Was an dem einem Ende der Welt geschieht, geht in Echtzeit als Fernsehbild rund um die Welt und kann überall wahrgenommen werden", stellt Thomas Meyer dazu fest. Dadurch wächst die Zahl der Informationen, die jeder Rezipient, auch die Akteure des Politischen selbst sammeln und verarbeiten müssen. Zugleich werden internationale Organisationen immer wichtiger, dadurch fallen auf immer mehr unterschiedlichen Ebenen Entscheidungen, die auf die Politik in einzelnen Teilbereichen Auswirkungen haben. Es entsteht eine Komplexität des Politischen, die kaum mehr zu überblicken ist. Die Medien reagieren darauf häufig durch vereinfachte Darstellungen, die kaum mehr die eigentlichen politischen Abläufe vermitteln - und so die Bürger vom politischen Handeln ausschlie en.
