Der Güterverkehr hat auch aus dieser Tatsache resultierend einen Paradigmenwechsel erfahren, denn die Bedeutung änderte sich ma geblich. Es ist nicht mehr der reine Gütertransport von A nach B, sondern der Güterverkehr ist mittlerweile ein Pool von diffizilen und differenzierten Aufgaben die als Verkehrsdienstleistung definiert, die transportvorbereitenden, -nachbereitenden und - begleitenden Leistungen umfassen. Die Nachfrage nach diesen Dienstleistungen stieg in den letzten Jahren als Resultat zunehmender Globalisierung exorbitant an. Dadurch erfuhr der Güterverkehr eine Entwicklung unter dem Begriff "Logistik" zu einer hochtechnischen, für die beteiligten Unternehmen unverzichtbaren Dienstleistungsbranche mit eigener Innovationsdynamik. Dieser Faktor ist in einer Supply Chain zunehmend Wettbewerbsvorteil bildend, denn zukünftig werden nicht mehr einzelne Unternehmen miteinander verglichen, sondern ganze Supply Chains stehen in einer Konkurrenz zueinander. Die Logistik integriert somit Unternehmen zu Wertschöpfungsketten und Wertschöpfungsketten zu Netzwerken. Im Zuge der Globalisierung wird Logistik und ihre integrierten Dienstleistung zu einem der wichtigsten Wirtschaftsfaktoren überhaupt. Aus diesen Entwicklungen resultierend ergeben sich auch hohe Anforderungen an Instrumentarien, die die gesamten dynamischen Prozesse zu einem einheitlichen und unternehmensübergreifenden Verständnis aller beteiligten Akteure in einer Supply Chain zusammenfassen.
