La storia della chirurgia è antica quasi quanto la razza umana. Il controllo dell'infezione della ferita è sempre stato una parte essenziale di qualsiasi procedura chirurgica ed è ancora oggi una sfida importante nelle sale operatorie degli ospedali. I pazienti che si sottopongono a un intervento chirurgico corrono sempre il rischio di sviluppare qualche tipo di complicazione post-operatoria. Negli ultimi decenni, l'importanza dei batteri aerodispersi nelle sale operatorie è stata oggetto di interesse e di controversie. Il numero di batteri aerodispersi vitali è altamente correlato al rischio di infezione per il paziente chirurgico. Quasi l'80-90% della contaminazione batterica rilevata in una ferita operatoria proviene dall'aria circostante. È stato dimostrato che i batteri cutanei, sia aerobi che anaerobi, si disperdono nell'aria e sopravvivono sufficientemente a lungo da costituire una via aerea di infezione della ferita. Il trasferimento di batteri dalla cute del paziente può avvenire anche a causa della procedura chirurgica, anche se questo aspetto è oggetto di continuo dibattito. I meccanismi di trasporto dei BCP sono molto più importanti negli interventi chirurgici a rischio di infezione, come le protesi ortopediche, perché le specie batteriche che causano le SSI appartengono alla normale flora cutanea.
