Bei der Bestimmung was ein Gro projekt ist, kommt es nicht auf die blo en Zahlen an, sondern auch auf die Grö e des Unternehmens. Allgemein kann daher von einem Gro projekt gesprochen werden, wenn das Projektbudget die Jahresumsätze der beteiligten Unternehmen übersteigt und ein Projekt länger als zwei Jahre dauert. Des Weiteren ist die Durchführung von Gro projekten mit diversen Risiken verbunden. Das grö te Risiko bei der Planung und Durchführung von Gro projekten ist ein mangelhaftes Anforderungsmanagement. Alle Anforderungen sollten zwischen den Parteien vor dem Start des Projektes geklärt werden, denn die Anforderungen im Nachhinein einzubauen kostet sehr viel Zeit und Geld. Da die Projektplanung von Gro projekten in der Theorie kaum möglich ist, wurde das Praxisbeispiel des Eurotunnelbaus gewählt. Hieran kann sehr gut gezeigt werden, was alles für eine Planung eines Gro projekts notwendig ist und wie schnell Fehler passieren können. Durch die Fehler steigen Kosten und die Zeitplanung gerät durcheinander, was sich auch bei dem Eurotunnelprojekt erkennen lässt. Die Kosten überstiegen die Planungen um ca. 80 % und das vorher geplante Eröffnungsdatum musste um ca. ein Jahr verschoben werden. Die grö ten Fehler geschahen hierbei in der Anfangsphase, denn der Bau wurde begonnen, ohne einen ausgereiften Projektplan zu besitzen. Genau dies ist aber ein Knackpunkt bei der Planung von Gro projekten. Es sollte vermieden werden ein Gro projekt zu früh anzugehen, denn jeder Fehler der bei der Planung gemacht wird, kostet bei späterer Entdeckung sehr viel Geld.
