The National Science Foundation's PROMISE: Maryland's Alliance for Graduate Education & the Professoriate (AGEP), has assembled graduate student development professional development details from 10 years of workshops. This book provides deans, faculty, and program directors with seminar ideas that will enhance graduate student retention. The primary sponsor for PROMISE is the National Science Foundation (NSF), Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR), Division of Human Resource Development (HRD). Current projects are supported by: Collaborative Research: AGEP - T: PROMISE AGEP Maryland Transformation # 1309290, #1309264, and #1309256. Foundational projects were developed and implemented under HRD grant #0202169 - "AGEP: Maryland's Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate," HRD grant #0639698 - "PROMISE: Maryland's AGEP"; and HRD grant #1111217 - "PROMISE Pathways." Dr. Renetta Garrison Tull is Associate Vice Provost for Graduate Student Professional Development & Postdoctoral Affairs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC: An Honors University in Maryland). She is Co-PI and Director for PROMISE: Maryland's Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) for the University System of Maryland, and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Bridge to the Doctorate at UMBC, both of which are programs that are sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Dr. Tull earned the B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Howard University, the M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Ph.D. in Speech Science from Northwestern University. She was a postdoctoral researcher and member of the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her "The Speech Technology Lab at Madison" in The Trace Research & Development Center, part of the UW-Madison College of Engineering, focused research efforts on technology solutions for persons with speech and hearing disabilities. Although she no longer runs a lab, Tull trains students, faculty, and administrators around the world on issues related to diversity in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Her research on broadening participation in STEM using social science concepts and cultural competencies, has been presented across the nationally and internationally, e.g., Panama, Mexico, Colombia, Ecuador, and Dubai. She develops professional development programs that cultivate success, progression, and promotion for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and early-career faculty. Several of the programs that she developed as part of the PROMISE Summer Success Institute have been replicated within conferences in the U.S. and in Latin America.
