Auff llig dabei ist die kontinuierliche Pr sens des Stoffes von dem wilhelminischen Kaiserreich bis heute. So sprechen die Etablierung als Schullekt re, drei Verfilmungen sowie internationales wissenschaftliches Interesse an der Novelle f r eine fortlaufend kulturelle Relevanz des Stoffes. Eine Rezeptionssituation, die aufgrund der politischen Lage in Deutschland retrospektiv besonders kritisch betrachtet wird, ist die der beiden Weltkriege, insbesondere die des Dritten Reiches. Dabei ist der Text gerade in dem totalit ren Nazideutschland von einer auffallenden Aktualit t. Bez glich der Stofftradition unter dem Naziregime ist sich der gegenw rtige Wissenschaftskanon weitgehend einig, indem er die kontempor re Interpretation des, Schimmelreiters" als rein propagandistisch motiviert abtut. Dies spiegelt sich in einer Vielzahl sp ter entstandener Sekund rliteratur zu der Lekt re wider. J ngere Stormforscher rekapitulieren die Phase zwischen dem Ende der Weimarer Republik und 1945 als eine Entfremdung des Textmaterials, die aus einer Umfunktionierung der Novelle resultiere. Im Nationalsozialismus fungiere sie lediglich als ein Medium, ein Mittel zum Zweck derzeitiger Machthaber ihre Propaganda zu verbreiten, wobei eine originalgetreue Interpretation des, Schimmelreiters" g nzlich vernachl ssigt werde.
