Dieses Buch ist entstanden aus den Manuskripten zu Vorlesungen und Seminaren, die ich von 1971 bis 1979 an der Universität Mainz durchgeführt habe. Wie bei diesen Lehrveranstaltungen ist es auch Ziel dieses Buches, die für komplexere Anwendungen in der Proze datenverarbeitung notwendigen Kenntnisse zu ver- mitteln. Trotz mannigfaltiger Literatur über Datenverarbeitung haben sich bisher nur wenige Autoren mit diesem anwendungs- nahen Spezialgebiet befa t. Ich habe es deshalb vorgezogen, in pragmatischer Weise die heute üblichen Architekturen für Proze rechner und Kommunika- tionsschnittstellen aufzuzeigen und dabei grundlegendere Über- legungen nur gelegentlich zu streifen. Die für den Anwender in der Proze datenverarbeitung charakteristischen Aspekte von Be- triebssystem und Programmiersprachen werden erläutert, ohne auf allgemeinere Fragestellungen dieser Gebiete einzugehen. Dem Anwender soll damit eine Übersicht vermittelt werden, die ihn in die Lage versetzt, Entscheidungen über die Vorzüge be- stimmter Mechanismen in den seine Projekte betreffenden Fällen zu finden. In den sieben Kapiteln dieses Textes werden zu Anfang die typischen Merkmale der Proze datenverarbeitung herausge- arbeitet und damit auch die Abgrenzung zu anderen Gebieten der Datenverarbeitung gefunden. In den folgenden Abschnitten werden die Charakteristika aller beim Einsatz von Proze - rechenanlagen verwendeten Komponenten behandelt. Dabei habe ich nach einer Darstellung der Prinzipien eine Reihe von Im- plementierungsformen anband heute üblicher Geräte und Tech- niken aufgezeigt mit dem Ziel, dem Leser in der bereits ge- nannten Weise Möglichkeiten zum Vergleich von Funktions- und Leistungsmerkmalen zu schaffen.
