Die bis heute nachwirkende Ausgrenzung der Hegelianer aus dem Kanon der Gründerväter der Germanistik übersieht, da von Hegels Philosophie und ihren Derivaten wichtige Impulse für die Verwissenschaftlichung der Literaturgeschichtsschreibung ausgegangen sind. Die Arbeit entwickelt erste Anhaltspunkte für diese These mittels einer wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Einschätzung der Deutschland-Schriften Heinrich Heines und deren Rezeption durch einen akademisch geschulten Kritikerkreis. Um die dabei gewonnenen Untersuchungsergebnisse auf eine breitere Materialbasis stellen zu können, porträtiert sie anschlie end Robert Prutz (1816-1872), Hermann Hettner (1821-1882) und Rudolf Haym (1821-1901) mittels eines ihre familiäre sowie akademische Sozialisation, berufliche Entwicklung, Publikationspraxis und Forschungspräferenzen thematisierenden Generationsprofils als ma geblich vom Hegelianismus geprägte Literaturhistoriker. Unter Einbeziehung einschlägiger Texte von Karl Rosenkranz und Friedrich Theodor Vischer thematisiert sie sodann die Hegel-Rezeption und die zeittypischen programmatischen Beiträge dieser Autoren zur Begründung einer anspruchsvollen Literaturgeschichtsschreibung und diskutiert die Leistungsfähigkeit ihrer Historiographie anhand der von ihnen vorgelegten, in Hayms Romantische Schule (1870) einmündenden Untersuchungen über die Romantik. Abschlie end bilanziert sie den Professionalisierungsgrad der Wissenschaftspraxis von Prutz, Hettner und Haym und situiert sie in der Geschichte der Germanistik.
