Publica-se aqui uma coletânea de textos relacionados com a história e a atualidade do movimento da Psicoterapia Institucional.Alguns destes textos são de índole essencialmente informativa; outros são de cariz assumidamente polémico - entenda-se a polémica como estímulo ao pensar.De entre os primeiros temos os de referência histórica e relatos sobre a metodologia da Psicoterapia Institucional na prática da Psiquiatria de Setor, a noção de equipe, a sócioanálise institucional e, muito particularmente, sobre as práticas de articulação da equipe de Psiquiatria com as equipes de Cuidados de Saúde Primários e com as estruturas locais de Ação Social; os segundos, de caráter polémico, são textos que assumem a reflexão ética e a crítica epistemológica de uma Psiquiatria objetivante que denega na teoria e na prática, tanto o Sujeito como a intersubjectividade.

O autor iniciou a sua carreira de trabalho em Psiquiatria como aluno da Escola de Enfermagem Psiquiátrica no Hospital Sobral Cid, em 1948. Em 1959 terminou o curso de Medicina e ingressou no Dispensário Central da Zona Sul do I.A.P. Em 1963 obteve uma bolsa do Governo Francês para estudar "investigação em psicofarmacologia clínica" no serviço de Deniker em Ste. Anne, Paris. Findo o tempo de bolseiro, ingressa como Interno no Hospital de Saint-Alban, berço do movimento, da Psicoterapia Institucional. Regressado a Portugal em 1969 é convidado a instalar e dirigir o recentemente criado Centro de Saúde Mental de Setúbal, onde trabalhou até requerer a sua aposentação, em 1992, na sequência da decisão ministerial de extinguir os Centros de Saúde Mental. Foi co-fundador da SPESM e da Associação de Saúde Mental Doutor Fernando Ilharco à qual continua ativamente ligado.
