Das Interesse an der Psychiatrie und an epidemiologischen Fragestellungen in der Psych- iatrie ist gro . Das ist nicht immer so gewesen. Trotz einiger Tradition war die psychiatri- sche Epidemiologie in den deutschsprachigen Liindern tiber Jahrzehnte hin in Vergessen- heit geraten. Vermutlich waren dafur die therapeutische Resignation, der Immobilismus des Versorgungssystems in der Vergangenheit und die teilweise gescheiterte Hoffnung auf die Entdeckung einheitlicher Krankheitsursachen verantwortlich. Die Wiederentdeckung der Umweltvariabilitlit endogener Psychosen, die Beschliftigung mit multifaktoriellen Modellen der Krankheitsentstehung und die verbesserten Moglich- keiten therapeutischer und rehabilitativer Versorgung haben der psychiatrischen Epide- miologie neue Fragestellungen erOffnet. Untersuchungen der Verteilung psychischer Krank- heiten und der Versorgungsbedtirfnisse der Bevoikerung sowie derjenigen Faktoren, die Einflu auf Entstehung, Auslosung, Verlauf und Folgen von Krankheiten haben, gewan- nen zunehmend Bedeutung fUr die klinische Psychiatrie, aber auch fUr Versorgungsplanung und Gesundheitspolitik. Der vorliegende Sammelband stellt ein StUck Entwicklung dieses Fachgebietes im Be- reich der deutschsprachigen Psychiatrie dar, das deutlich unter der Anregung anglo-ameri- kanischer und skandinavischer Vorarbeiten steht. Er stellt zugleich die ersten gro eren Arbeitsergebnisse aus zwei Einrichtungen vor, die einen Schwerpunkt psychiatrisch-epi- demiologischer Forschung in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland tragen: aus dem Sonder- forschungsbereich 116 - Psychiatrische Epidemiologie - an der Universitlit Heidelberg mit A enstelle an der Psychiatrischen Klinik der Universitlit Mtinchen und aus dem 1975 neu erOffneten Zentralinstitut fUr Seelische Gesundheit in Mannheim.
