Noch vor zehn Jahren wurde ein Humangenetiker, der auf die Bedeutung genetischer Faktoren bei der Entstehung von Geisteskrankheiten hinwies, in Psychiater- und Psychologenkreisen nicht selten als ein Fossil aus iiberwunden geglaubter Vorzeit angesehen. Inzwischen haben die eindrucksvollen Erfolge der Molekulargenetik zu einer vollig geanderten Einschatzung gefiihrt. Die Molekulargenetik stellt Methoden zur Verfiigung, die zur Analyse genetischer Krankheiten des Menschen, vermutlich auch von Geisteskrankheiten, angewandt werden konnen. Bereits ein Drittel der bisher bekannten menschlichen Gene sind mehr oder weniger genau chromosomal kartiert. Bei einer standig wachsenden Anzahl monogen erblicher Krankheiten kennt man die Natur der Mutation und ihre biochemischen Auswirkungen. Es ist zu er- warten, daB diese Kenntnisse eines Tages auch zur Entwicklung spezifischer Be- handlungsverfahren fiihren werden. Die Psychiater unterliegen gegenwartig eher der Gefahr, daB sie die Erklarungs- kraft genetischer Methoden iiberschatzen. Diese Neigung beruht auf der irrigen Vorstellung, die bei der erfolgreichen Analyse Mendelscher Merkmale angewandten Methoden konnten einfach auf psychiatrische Krankheiten iibertragen werden. So- wohl die Erwartungen an die Genetik als auch die vielfach vorhandenen Befiirch- tungen vor ihr beriicksichtigen nicht die unvorstellbare Komplexitat psychiatrischer Krankheiten. In der psychiatrischen Genetik fiihlen sich Humangenetiker, Psychiater und kli- nische Psychologen meist gleichermaBen unsicher. Jeder verfiigt nur iiber ein al- lenfalls eingeschranktes Urteilsvermogen gegeniiber dem jeweils anderen Fach. Das vorliegende Buch stellt den Versuch einer Bestandsaufnahme dar. Es soll Psychiatern und klinischen Psychologen genetische Konzepte vermitteln und dem Humangene- tiker psychiatrische Forschung verstandlich machen.
