Einen Einblick in die wissenschaftstheoretischen Grundlagen der Psychoanalyse sowie die genauere Betrachtung von Lorenzers Werk, die über den Kontext der Deutung hinaus geht, kann in dem Umfang dieser Arbeit nicht geleistet werden und muss daher an anderer Stelle geschehen. Um dennoch einen Überblick über weitere Positionen zur Frage der Deutung beziehungsweise Hermeneutik zu geben, werden Ricoeur und andere Vertreter herangezogen. Deutung ist die zentrale Technik der Psychoanalyse und gleichzeitig ihr zentrales Problem. Sie ist der Angelpunkt, an dem man Freud ein szientistisches Selbstmissverständnis unterstellen kann und bildet die Grundlage für eine Debatte, die bis heute andauert. Bemerkenswerter Weise kommt die Deutung als Intervention selbst jedoch selten in der Behandlung zum Einsatz. Sie ist sorgfältig platziert. "Deutungen unbewusster Sinnzusammenhänge sollen zur Einsicht in die Entstehung von neurotischen Konflikten, Symptomen und Charakterhaltungen beitragen, und diese Einsicht führt im Zuge der Durcharbeitung [...] zur Aufhebung der neurotischen Beeinträchtigungen". Diese sehr weitreichende Definition zeigt auf, wie vielen wissenschaftstheoretischen Positionen Platz gewährt werden muss, will man sich undogmatisch der Problemstellung widmen. In der Literatur finden sich häufig zwei Unterscheidungen des Deutungsbegriffs. Laplanche (1973) formuliert die Deutung einerseits als "Aufdeckung der latenten Bedeutung der Worte und Verhaltensweisen eines Subjekts durch die analytische Untersuchung" und andererseits als Intervention in der Behandlung: " [...] die dem Subjekt gemachte Mitteilung, um ihm zu dieser
