Meist wurden sie von Psychiatern oder Sozialwissenschaftlern durchgefUhrt, die iiber keine psychotherapeutisch-psychoanalyti- sche Ausbildung und Erfahrung verfiigten. Das Hauptinteresse lag oft in der Erfassung der sog. groBen psychiatrischen Erkrankungen, wahrend die psychosomatischen Storungen, ihr charakterneuroti- scher Kontext und die friihkindliche Entwicklung - wenn iiber- haupt - nur verkiirzt behandelt wurden. Psychoanalytiker wie- derum wagten sich kaum an deskriptiv-epidemiologische Feldfor- schungsprojekte: Als forschende Therapeuten wird fUr sie das Verstandnis eines fremden Lebensschicksals zum schopferischen Akt, eine Darstellung des empathisch Miterlebten hat fUr sie den Gestaltungswert eines Kunstwerks; und es bedeutet fUr sie einen fast unaufhebbaren Gegensatz zu zahlen, zu messen und gesam- melte Befunde statistisch zu bearbeiten. Die Arbeitsgruppe, die unter der Leitung von H. Schepank das hier vorgelegte Werk gestaltet hat, zeigt dem Leser, daB sich einfUh- lendes Verstehen, zielgerichtetes Beobachten und ein methodisch kontrollierter hypothesenpriifender Forschungsansatz - mit MaB, Zahl und EDV-Dokumentation - im Bereich der psychoanalyti- schen Forschung nicht ausschlieBen miissen.
