Pourquoi dit-on "jube grise" au lieu de "jupe grise"? Cet ouvrage porte sur une variation phonologique fréquemment observée en français, l'assimilation de voisement. La première série d'expériences a permis d'étudier la production des mots assimilés. Un nouvel indice acoustique est proposé qui mesure le degré d'assimilation entre deux mots. Les mesures acoustiques ont montré que l'assimilation est souvent un processus gradué et le degré d'assimilation est modulé en fonction du voisement sous-jacent. Cette propriété phonétique a été opérationnalisée dans une deuxième série d'expériences dans le but d'étudier le traitement perceptif des mots assimilés. Les résultats ont montré que le rôle du contexte droit, responsable de l'assimilation, varie en fonction du degré d'assimilation. Enfin, l'hypothèse de la présence de traces acoustiques dans les mots assimilés était confirmée dans une troisième série d'expériences en amorçage sémantique. Dans l'ensemble, ce travail expérimental s'inscrit dans un cadre à la fois méthodologique et théorique selon lequel la production et la perception de la parole sont envisagées comme deux versants du même système de traitement cognitif.
