Die gro e Umwälzung In der Psychologie hat sich im Verlauf eines halben Jahrhunderts eine Um- wälzung vollzogen, die sich in ihrer Tragweite mit den grö ten wissenschaft- lichen Umwälzungen der Vergangenheit vergleichen lä t. Freilich hat sie sich als wissenschaftliches Ereignis so sehr in der Stille abgespielt, da sie nicht ein- mal allen Angehörigen des Faches recht bewu t, für die Nachbarfächer und vollends für die Au enwelt aber nur in einigen Schlagworten, wie "Struktur", "Gestalt", "Ganzheit", bemerklich wird, denen aber nicht ohne weiteres an- zusehen ist, ob sie mehr als eine literarische Modeströmung anzeigen. Die ersten Schritte dieses Vorganges sind gegen 1890 (bei MACH, EHREN- FELS, CoRNELIUS und WuNDT, s. 3) festzustellen; ein gro erTeil der Klärung war vor Ausbruch des ersten Weltkrieges erreicht; wesentliche weitere Schritte erfolgten unmittelbar danach. Seine ausführliche Darstellung macht den ln- halt dieses Buches aus. Es wäre verlockend, ihn gleich in den Zusammenhang anderer geistiger Erneuerungsbewegungen der Gegenwart und darüber hin- aus unserer geistigen Gesamtentwicklung durch die Jahrhunderte zu stellen; doch kann hier nur einiges wenige kurz angedeutet werden: Es handelt sich um den Abschlu eines wichtigen Ausschnitts aus der Auseinandersetzung mit dem Geist der sogenannten Neuzeit, der seine Blüte im 17. und 18. Jahr- hundert erlebte, und der in der Philosophie seinen schärfsten Ausdruck im mechanistischen Weltbild der französischen Philosophie und im englischen Em- pirismus gefunden hat.
