Auch sechzig Jahre nach Kriegsende versucht der Film die Vergangenheit zu bewältigen und dem Erstarken des Faschismus entgegenzutreten. In dieser Zeit gab es unterschiedliche Ansichten über die Darstellbarkeit des Holocaust und damit verbundene Vorgehensweisen. Frühe Dokumentationen wie "Nacht und Nebel" von Alain Resnais, die oft als seicht bezeichnete Fernsehserie "Holocaust" von Marvin Chomsky und Claude Lanzmanns neuneinhalbstündige "Shoah" versuchten die Geschehnisse des Zweiten Weltkrieges filmisch darzustellen. Roberto Benigni hat 1997 erstmalig einen ganz anderen Stil gewählt und sich der Mittel der Komik bedient. Bereits während des Zweiten Weltkrieges hatte beispielsweise auch Charlie Chaplin in "Der gro e Diktator" diese Form genutzt, ohne dabei aber das volle Ausma des Nationalsozialismus und seine Gräueltaten schon zu kennen. Inzwischen ist diese Form jedoch möglicherweise salonfähig geworden. Seit durch Filme wie "Schindlers Liste" von Steven Spielberg die Darstellung des Holocaust auch Hollywood erobert hat, werden auf diese Art und Weise auf jeden Fall deutlich mehr Menschen erreicht. Ob Benignis Humor in "La vita è bella" und Komik im Allgemeinen dem Thema Holocaust gewachsen ist, darüber lässt sich streiten. Fraglich ist, ob Benignis Film eine solche publizistische Debatte ausgelöst hat. In dieser Arbeit sollen deshalb Filmkritiken aus überregionalen Tageszeitungen und Magazinen gegenüber gestellt werden.
