Acest roman este dedicat marelui explorator Pythéas din Massalia, geograf, matematician şi astronom în acelaşi timp, contemporan cu Alexandru cel Mare.
Comparat cu Căpitanul Cook, Columb, Galileo sau Darwin, de către Barry Cunliffe, Pythéas reprezintă un adevărat „simbol al expansiunii civilizaţiei elene către ţările din nordul şi vestul Europei," în viziunea arheologului Ferdinand Lallemand, efectuând prima călătorie în jurul Oceanului şi descoperind insulele britanice Albion şi Ierné, ajungând în Thulé (Islanda), „nu doar pentru a găsi o rută nouă prin est şi Marea Neagră, dar şi pentru a putea să-şi verifice calculele despre latitudine, sau variaţiile de durată ale unei zile, în funcţie de apropierea sau depărtarea de polul Nord."
Romanul este structurat în trei părţi. Prima parte pregăteşte „intrarea" în lumea secolului IV î.e.n, al cărui geniu elen urma să marcheze întreaga umanitate a unui continent, destul de tânără şi dornică de cunoaştere.
Partea a doua este dedicată călătoriei propriu-zise, a cărei traseu geografic îl urmează pe cel menţionat de Strabon, sau alţi istorici.
Este centrat în special pe iniţierea gradată a echipajului, în vederea separării de o lume crepusculară spre a-l pregăti pentru marea întâlnire nu doar cu oamenii aparţinând acelor „terrae barbarae," ci şi cu o realitate total diferită, pe care trebuia să o înfrunte.
A treia parte descrie etapele întoarcerii, când marinarii revin „acasă."
Autorităţile salută succesul ştiinţific al lui Pythéas, dar consideră misiunea un eşec, pentru că Pythéas nu a putut să refacă ruta lui Jason. Totuşi lumea este mulţumită de investiţia comercială nava este plină de cositor şi chihlimbar, ceea ce va asigura un bun profit corporaţiei de metale din Massalia.
În acelaşi timp, după momentele de „iluminare" graţie acestei experienţe, marinarii încep să resimtă anumite dificultăţi în propria lor regăsire, precum şi în reintegrarea într-o sociatate care nu este pregătită să le accepte noua identitate şi mai ales un asemenea „adevăr," devastator pentru mentalitatea acelei epoci.
În cele din urmă Pythéas va fi condamnat la uitare. Din nefericire istoricul Strabon îi va ataşa eticheta de „mincinos," pe care o va purta secole întregi, etichetă care ar trebui definitiv anulată, pentru a putea deschide poarta reabilitării acestui personaj, mai ales acum, când dialogul trebuie să fie o prioritate a lumii în care trăim.
