L'un des défis majeurs dans la convergence des réseaux et des services vers la technologie tout-IP est le maintien de la qualité de service (QoS) des flux audio/vidéo transmis sur ce type de réseaux. Ce problème s'accroit quand ce type de flux traverse des liens sans fil. Dans ce dernier cas, ces services doivent faire face à plusieurs inconvénients engendrés par le manque de fiabilité du canal sans fil et son partage par plusieurs utilisateurs. La méthode d'accès de base DCF (Distributed Coordination Function) dans les réseaux locaux sans fil du standard IEEE 802.11 est incapable d'assurer la performance demandée aux applications voix/vidéo. En effet, DCF a été initialement conçue pour les services Best Effort. Ainsi l'amendement 802.11e a été publié avec le but d'introduire le support de la QoS dans ce type de réseau. Ce dernier a réussi à introduire la différentiation de service via la nouvelle méthode d'accès EDCA (Enhanced Distributed Coordination Function), en mode décentralisé et HCCA (Hybrid Controlled Channel Access) en mode centralisé. Cependant, il ne permet pas de fournir les garanties de QoS aux applications ayant des contraintes strictes de QoS.
