Inversion of open-hole logs is a statistical approach to extract information pertaining to the rock formation seen from the composite signals of logging tools. Quality must be assured of inversion procedure consisting of three basic steps: i.defining model and model parameters;ii.ii. Forward modelling equations for predicting the measurements;iii.iii. Inverse modelling using accurate estimation of solution parameters from the well logs requires a realistic model and model parameters, which can describe the log behaviour/response accurately for robust log data inversion. In the first step, model and model response parameters are defined on matrix/ mineral identification cross plots. These cross plots exclude fluid components and provide graphical solutions only for matrix/mineral rock constituents as in case of ternary diagram, which indicates solutions of three simultaneous equations. End points of minerals/rock constituents on these cross plots are selected in such a way that polygon drawn through the endpoints envelops all the data points as far as possible. Any log response defined as composite volumetric average mineral log response will always fall within the polygon defined by lines joining these end points. In other words, linear log response equations always have solution. Number of cross lots are generated for all the possible subsets viz. fifteen cross plots for six logs. Apparent matrix logs have been computed by removing porosity/water component using core calibrated total porosity. In case of non-availability of core data, several new mineral identification cross plots have been generated by computing gradient of matrix components defined as difference between log and water point for different logs. Mineral/matrix response parameters defined as vertices of polygon on these cross plots also ensure the existence of mathematically feasible solutions as well as convergence of minimization of incoherence function, measuring misfit between actual and predicted logs, for robust log data inversion.All the non-resistivity tools, used for deriving model and parameters in the first step, generally log response represents the volumetric average property of the constituents of the formation. Most crucial part of the forward modelling in the second step is selection of precise nonlinear resistivity tool response equation also known as the water saturation equation. Whether variation on resistivity is predominantly controlled by water volume or change of formation resistivity factor has been ascertained beforehand through visual correlation on log motifs to apply appropriate equation.Physical realities and dependencies are important, and natural, objective constraints limit the solution parameters in the third step of inverse modelling. Physical bounds, geological and geophysical constrains and constrains known from core data has been applied to limit the solutions. Computation of porosity has been limited by applying the constrain equation as per the shale distribution in the reservoirs.In this book, complete procedure/methodology depending on availability of log suits and core data followed by model and parameter selection for the quality assures inversion of open-hole logs has been illustrated with examples of reservoirs from different oil fields of Indian basins, which are most problematic and difficult for log evaluation point of view
