Als Quantenphysiker wird Professor Max Labadia seit Jahren mit Paradoxa der Natur konfrontiert, was deren objektive Wahrnehmbarkeit und Kausalität betrifft - mit der subatomaren Leere von Materie etwa, oder der Relativität von Raum und Zeit. Persönlich leidet der Mann an einer Agoraphobie, die es ihm verbietet die eigenen vier Wände zu verlassen. Statt der Welt drau en wird deshalb Quentin, ein Computer mit überdimensionalem Bildschirm zur Projektionsfläche seiner Wünsche und Ängste. Max träumt viel und ist ebenso häufig im Internet unterwegs. So überlappen für ihn allmählich Traum und Cyberspace mit der greifbaren Realität, die ihm verbleibt. Als logischer Denker vermag er dem Ruf des Paradoxen aber nicht zu folgen, wenn es um persönliche Befindlichkeit geht. Der Freund und Therapeut mit dem er, über eine Webcam verbunden, arbeitet wie einst Pauli mit Jung, kann seiner Ahnung verrückt zu sein nur wenig entgegenhalten. Denn dafür häufen sich die Hinweise, als sich herausstellt, dass Quentin nicht nur mathematische Fragen löst, sondern die Rolle von Labadias Unbewusstem übernommen hat, das ihm die Träume diktiert und konkrete Absurditäten serviert, die selbst ein Quantenphysiker nicht verdauen kann. Glücklicherweise teilt der Mann seine Einsamkeit dank eines Internet-Programms nicht nur mit Einstein, Bohr oder Bohm, sondern auch mit Lao Tse, Nagarjuna und Hiob. Seine Begegnung mit all diesen Persönlichkeiten weckt im Roman jene erstaunlichen Parallelen zum Leben, die zwischen der modernen Physik bestehen und Jahrhunderte alter fernöstlicher Philosophie. Max Labadias Kampf mit dem Unbewussten, belustigend und erschreckend zugleich, reflektiert dabei Erkenntnisse der analytischen Psychologie.
