Rajmohan's Wife by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee is considered the first Indian novel in English. Set in 19th-century Bengal, it follows Mati, a strong-willed woman trapped in a cruel marriage to the violent Rajmohan. As she becomes entangled in a plot involving stolen documents, family secrets, and her love for her gentle brother-in-law Madhav, Mati's moral strength and courage are tested. The novel blends romance, social criticism, and suspense, portraying the oppression of women and the corruption in rural Bengali society. Through Mati, Bankim critiques patriarchy and colonial-era injustice, while laying the foundation for Indian English fiction.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee (1838–1894) was a pioneering Indian Bengali novelist, poet, essayist, and journalist, widely regarded as a founding father of modern Indian literature. He wrote India’s first English novel, Rajmohan’s Wife, and major Bengali novels like Durgeshnandini, Kapalkundala, Anandamath, and Devi Chaudhurani, blending romance, patriotism, and spiritual themes. His hymn "Vande Mataram" became a symbol of India's freedom struggle. A master of both fiction and philosophical writing, Bankim also produced essays, religious commentaries, and poetry, exploring science, society, and dharma. His works laid the literary and cultural foundations for Indian nationalism and inspired generations of thinkers and writers.
