The construction of identity in the Indian subcontinent is complex as this region has witnessed the coexistence and conflicts of various racial, ethnic, religious and linguistic groups. This intricate interaction in a multicultural society has resulted in the creation of diversified identities. The cultural interchanges and mercantile transactions among different territories of the subcontinent have further facilitated this process. These negotiations between disparate ideologies have concomitantly led to the integration of diverse identities and fragmentation of homogeneous ethnic-racial categories. With time, it has come to form the fabric of our nation, in both cultural and political terms. (Re)framing Identity: Responses from History, Culture and Literature offers critical essays and research articles focusing on the representation and creation of identity in the subcontinent concerning history, literature, politics, culture studies, and other relevant fields.
