Il n'est pas anodin que le texte de l'abbé Calderon, Promethee, la religion de l'homme, écrit il y a presque 15 ans par un professeur de séminaire et théologien reconnu, ait été choisi, traduit et publié cette année chez CLOVIS (Maison d'édition de la FSSPX). Ce travail n'est pas l'oeuvre d'un clerc obscur, diffusé à petit tirage à compte d'auteur. L'auteur s'y emploie, avec autorité, à restituer à Dieu ce que l'orgueil des Renaissants et de leur descendance conciliaire avait prétendu Lui ravir. Mais en convoquant, pour ce faire, un argumentaire de part en part surnaturaliste, l'auteur en vient malgré lui à illustrer le fait que, en théologie comme ailleurs, l'enfer peut être pavé de bonnes intentions.

Joseph Mérel, conscient des effets ravageurs de la mentalité surnaturaliste dans les rangs de la Tradition catholique, nous propose ici, selon une démarche déférente et honnête - à ce titre même dénuée de toute concession complaisante -, une analyse détaillée de ce texte ainsi qu'une mise en évidence des présupposés et des enjeux - moraux et politiques - de la thèse de l'abbé Calderon.

Les tenants de la théocratie, partisans d'une subordination intrinsèque du pouvoir politique au ministère ecclésiastique, sont à bon droit classés dans le rang des réactionnaires attachés à une vision du monde clérico-catholique théocentrique fort opposée à l'anthropocentrisme de l'esprit démocrate-chrétien objectivement et subjectivement solidaire de complaisances doctrinalement modernistes. Pourtant les uns et les autres s'accordent au moins sur un point, à savoir le refus sans concession de la doctrine nationaliste tenue par les premiers pour immanentiste et païenne, par les seconds pour destructrice de la "dignité de la personne humaine". Cette commune aversion pour un même ennemi ne serait-elle pas l'envers d'une dilection pour une "sensibilité" commune, à savoir un certain augustinisme politique exaltant la morale au détriment du Politique et favorisant de manière obligée, une conception personnaliste de l'homme?

La mise en évidence de cette affinité non dite entre frères ennemis fait l'objet du présent travail, lequel est complété par l'inventaire des conditions à raison desquelles un certain nationalisme non seulement n'offense pas les exigences du bien commun universel et de la morale catholique, mais encore est requis par elles.
