Orna Donath veröffentlichte im Jahr 2015 ihre Studie Regretting Motherhood: A Sociopolitical Analysis und rührte damit an einem Tabuthema, an welches sich zuvor keiner wagte. Donath befragte 23 Frauen, ob sie mit ihren heutigen Kenntnissen und Erfahrungen noch einmal Kinder bekommen würden, könnten sie die Zeit zurückdrehen. Alle antworteten klar und deutlich mit Nein. Für Aufsehen sorgte ihre Forschung insbesondere in Deutschland. Gerade in den sozialen Netzwerken wird die aufgeworfene Debatte heftig diskutiert. Einerseits wurden die israelischen Frauen als Rabenmütter, psychisch krank und gefühlskalte Egoistinnen bezeichnet, andererseits meldeten sich auch Mütter zu Wort, die ebenfalls unzufrieden mit ihrer Mutterrolle sind. Doch warum schlägt diese Studie in Deutschland so hohe Wellen? Der gesellschaftliche Konsens besagt, dass Mutterschaft der Glückbringer einer jeden Frau ist. Es ist evolutionstechnisch so vorgesehen, dass ihr Lebenszweck das Gro ziehen von Kindern ist und dass sie von ihrer Mutterrolle erfüllt wird. Aus eben diesem Grund haben bereuende Mütter Angst davor, kritisiert, stigmatisiert und ausgegrenzt zu werden, besonders da der Konkurrenzkampf unter Müttern kein Geheimnis ist. Jeder noch so kleine Fehler wird zum Anlass genommen eine der Mütter auszugrenzen oder ihr zumindest Vorwürfe zu machen. Also behalten Betroffene ihre Unzufriedenheit für sich. Der Vorwurf, dass eine bereuende Mutter ihr Kind nicht liebt, steht schnell im Raum, obwohl sie oft beides empfinden: Reue und Liebe. Doch ist es genau diese Ambivalenz, die auf Unverständnis stö t. Es wird also deutlich, dass es in der Debatte um Regretting Motherhood um mehr geht,
