Jahrhundert im deutschen Sprachraum wahrgenommen wurde, wird erweitert durch die Frage nach den kultur- und wissenschaftsgeschichtlichen Bedingungen und Interessen im Umgang mit der Fremde. In Reiseberichten - als Artikulationsort einer primären Erfahrung des fremden Reiselandes - und Romanzen - als exemplarischer Form einer literarischen Aneignung spanischer Kultur - wird das je spezifische Verhältnis von Eigenem und Fremdem, die wechselnde Abgrenzung, Definition und Bewertung des Fremden analysiert.

Der erste Hauptteil der Arbeit bietet eine Dokumentation der deutschsprachigen Berichte von Spanienreisen, die in die Entwicklung der Reiseliteratur der Aufklärungszeit eingeordnet und hinsichtlich gattungsspezifischer und individueller Wahrnehmungsweisen untersucht werden (u.a. C.C. Plüer, J. Hager, Chr.A. Fischer, H.F. Link und W. von Humboldt). Im Überblick zur Präsenz spanischer Literatur in Deutschland skizziert der Verfasser den Horizont der Rezeption spanischer Kultur in Deutschland und zeigt Perspektiven für die weitere Erforschung der deutsch-spanischen Kulturbeziehungen auf. Der zweite Hauptteil greift einen Teilbereich der Adaption spanischer Literatur auf. Im historischen Überblick wie in Detailanalysen (u.a. J.W.L. Gleim, D. Schiebeler, J.G. von Herder) wird die Funktion der Rezeption spanischer Romanzen in der Frühgeschichte der Kunstballade untersucht.
