El manuscrito original de la Relación de Michoacán se conserva en la Biblioteca de El Escorial y constaba de tres partes.


En la primera, de la que sólo se conserva un folio, se describían los dioses purépechas, nombrados tarascos por los españoles, y las fiestas que se hacían en su honor;

en la segunda se relata la vida del héroe legendario Tariacuri,

en la tercera parte se describen las costumbres de los tarascos y se narra cómo fue conquistado el reino por los españoles.

Algunos investigadores consideran que la primera parte la destruyeron las autoridades españolas, quienes en 1557 prohibieron estrictamente el estudio de las creencias de los indios.

Según se aprecia en el manuscrito, el autor se considera un intérprete de las referencias aquí contenidas y todo indica que dominaba la lengua purépecha.

Es probablemente obra del franciscano fray Jerónimo de Alcalá, conocedor de las tradiciones indígenas. Se cree que a petición del primer virrey de la Nueva España, don Antonio de Mendoza, con la información que proporcionaron viejos sacerdotes indígenas.

La Relación de Michoacán es una de las obras más completas sobre el origen y las tradiciones del pueblo purépecha.

Por la riqueza de su contenido la Relación de Michoacán es una fuente indispensable para los estudios sobre los tarascos y los primeros años del Michoacán colonial.
