Der Umbruch von 1989/90 in Ostdeutschland hat alle gesellschaftlichen Bereiche erfa t, nicht nur den politischen Bereich, sondern auch den wirt- schaftlichen, den rechtlichen und den kulturellen. Die sozialen Veränderun- gen erstreckten sich vom Berufsleben bis in das Konsum-und Freizeitver- halten und den W ohn-und Lebensstil der neuen Bundesbürger hinein. Die Veränderungen betrafen ihr Verhältnis zur Bürokratie, zum Geld, zur Zeit, ja sogar zum eigenen Körper. Liegt es angesichts dieses umfassenden, radikalen Wandels nicht nahe, auch auf dem religiösen Feld mit deutlich wahrnehmba- ren Veränderungen zu rechnen? Zunächst könnte man vermuten, da mit der Liberalisierung der politi- schen Verhältnisse in Ostdeutschland eine neue Zuwendung zu Religion und Kirche einsetzte. Jahrzehntelang waren Religion und Kirche gesellschaftlich ausgegrenzt, ideologisch stigmatisiert und politisch unterdrückt. 1989 ge- hörten nur noch etwa 30 Prozent der Ostdeutschen einer der christlichen Kirchen an. 1949, zum Zeitpunkt der Gründung der DDR, waren noch über 90 Prozent Mitglied in einer Kirche, dabei über 80 Prozent Mitglied der evangelischen Kirche. Innerhalb von 40 Jahren hatte sich der Anteil der Kon- fessionslosen fast verzehnfacht. Viele erwarteten daher, da die Entspannung der politischen Verhältnisse - die Beendigung der Benachteiligungen von Christen im öffentlichen Leben und in der schulischen und beruflichen Aus- bildung sowie die Entideologisierung der Erziehung - zu einem neuen Auf- schwung in den Kirchen und Religionsgemeinschaften führen würde. Diese Erwartung verstärkte sich angesichts der besonderen katalytischen Rolle, die die Kirchen im Proze des gesellschaftlichen Umbruchs von 1989/90 gespielt hatten.
