\"Die holländische Malerei kann man füglich als ein Erzeugnis der staatlichen Selbständigkeit Hollands bezeichnen. Solange die Niederlande ein Ganzes bildeten, war von einer besonderen holländischen Kunst gegenüber der tonangebenden flandrischen nicht die Rede. Das Jahr 1609, in welchem der Abschlu eines zwölfjährigen Waffenstillstandes tatsächlich die Anerkennung der sieben vereinigten Provinzen als eines selbständigen Staates in sich trug, war gewisserma en das Geburtsjahr der holländischen Malerei. Worin die Aufgabe bestand, die das neue Volk seinen Künstlern stellte, fa t ein französischer Schriftsteller sehr zutreffend in das Wort zusammen: es verlangte, da man ihm sein Abbild liefere. Das ist in der Tat der Inhalt der holländischen Malerei: das ehrliche, wahrheitsgetreue Abbild von Land und Leuten und Dingen, die Wiedergabe der schlichten Wirklichkeit, wie die Heimat und die Gegenwart sie zeigten und im Künstlerauge sich spiegeln lie en, mag nun Bildnis, Genre, Landschaft, Tierstück oder Stillleben der Gegenstand des Gemäldes sein. Dieses ehrliche Abbilden der Wirklichkeit war ein gro er Teil der Kunst des einen, der über zahlreiche ausgezeichnete Maler hoch emporragend als der grö te holländische Maler dasteht; aber es war nicht seine ganze Kunst. Rembrandt wu te seine staunenswürdige Befähigung zu geistreich treffender Wiedergabe der Natur seinem eignen freien Schaffensdrange dienstbar zu machen und fand in ihr das Mittel, den Gebildeten seiner eigenwilligen und lebhaften, gelegentlich geradezu schwärmerischen Einbildungskraft eine Gestalt zu verleihen.\" Dieses Buch über den gro artigen holländischen Meister Rembrandt ist ein unveränderter Nachdruck der Originalausgabe von 1895.
