나는 사주팔자에 역마살이 끼어있는 모양이다. 세 살 때 부모와 떨어져 조부모와 같이 살면서 할아버지로부터 한자와 예절을 배우며 유학을 시작했다. 이어 청주, 서울을 거처, 미국 유학 생활까지 이어졌고, 그 타향살이는 아직도 미국에서 계속 중이다. 미국의 대학교수는 정년이 없다. 일부 미국 교수들은 70세에 은퇴하지만, 많은 미국 교수들은 대개 65세에 은퇴한다. 나는 63세에 미국 교수직을 은퇴하고, 서울에 가서 아주대학교에서 다시 석좌교수로 3년을 보낸 뒤, 결국 66세에 은퇴했다. 당시, 아주대학교에서 좀 더 있으라고도 했으나, 나는 단호히 교직을 떠났다. 그 이유는 은퇴하고 난 뒤 골프도 치고 싶었고, 특히 여행하면서 글을 쓰려는 계획이 있었기 때문이었다. 2004년에 '은퇴 인의 낙원'이라고 알려진 Laguna Woods Village로 이사를 왔으며, 글 쓰는 일을 천직이라고 믿고, 열심히 글을 쓰고 있다. 우선 한글을 제대로 읽지 못하는 내 아이들과 손자를 비롯하여 외국에 사는 수많은 2세대, 그리고 그 다음 세대 동포를 위하여 영어로 책을 세 권 냈다. "Dear Children(2009: ISBN# 978-0-557-14584-3)," "Destiny of a Running Horse(2011: ISBN# 978-1-453-76740-5)," "Traveling Stories (2013: ISBN# 978-1-475-500156-3)," 이렇게 세 권을 출간, amazon.com에서 팔리고 있다. 그리고 2007년에는 방일영 문화재단에서 언론인과 언론학 교수들의 저술을 위해 실시하고 있는 언론인 출판 지원으로 "은퇴 없는 은퇴(2007: ISBN# 978-89-960072-0-3, 03040)"를 한국어로 발간하였다.
