Sind Menschenrechte damit Rechte, die uns ohne besonderen Grund zustehen? Können wir sie wirklich verteidigen und wird das Ziel erreicht, unsere abendländisch geprägte "Idee des gerechten Rechts" global durchzusetzen oder müssen wir mit der Gefahr leben, dass unsere ureuropäische Vorstellung von der Achtung jeglichen menschlichen Lebens einmal keinen Bestand mehr haben wird? So wünschenswert die Wahrung der Menschenrechte für jeden einzelnen auch sein mag, so werden sie auch heute noch rund um den Globus diskutiert und verletzt. Auch heute können wir mit dem Auftreten der besonders aggressiven Terrorgruppe "Islamischer Staat" beobachten wie bröckelig das Konstrukt der universal verstandenen Menschenrechte ist. Die wohlhabende westliche Welt ist in Aufruhr und hat Angst vor der "Islamisierung des Westens" und rechtfertigt damit Menschenrechtsverstö e im Namen der Menschenrechte. Aufgrund dieser politischen Problematik gibt es einen philosophischen Diskurs, der die Durchsetzung der Menschenrechte und ihre Legitimation hinterfragt. Die Begründungsversuche bewegen sich dabei zwischen Universalität und Kulturrelativismus. Richard Rorty wird zu den Vertretern des Kulturrelativismus gezählt. Er stellt eine herausfordernde Position in Hinblick auf den in der abendländischen Kultur populären Universalismus dar. Mit seinem Essay "Menschenrechte, Rationalität und Gefühl" behauptet, er, dass "die Frage, ob Menschen wirklich die in der Helsinki-Akte aufgeführten Rechte besitzen, überhaupt nicht gestellt zu werden braucht" und das Buch "Onkel Toms Hütte" mehr zur Umsetzung der Menschenrechte beitrag
