About The Book

Second Edition will be out in winter 2014. Rise Up! Evening Service Buddhist Study and Practice Guide is a full evening service with English, Chinese and hanyu pinyin. It has large fonts and readable text along with many illustrations to understand the service while you are participating in temple services or engaged in home study. This is the evening service with the Amitabha Sutra and the Meng Shan Ignorant Mountain Food Offering Service. This edition also includes the alternate days 88 Buddhas Repentance. This evening service is the last part of the Buddhist day. Monks and nuns perform this service before their evening medicine meal. Pure Land practice is mind training, it teaches how to calm your mind, the benefits gained from lifelong practice of a Pure Land method are gained in life and at the moment of death allowing one to choose to pass into rebirth in the Pure Land. The Pure Land is a pure Buddha realm created by Amitabha Buddha. This place is for cultivation of enlightenment and has no obstacles thus making it easier to gain nirvana. Also this place has many people and beings with like minds who support your practice. Far from being a funerary tradition Purelanders embrace life, practice charity without rewards of any kind, study all forms of Buddha dharma, ask for dharma teachings from monks and nuns, and actively participate in temple services, fully supporting the Triple Jewel with donations of money, time and food; all the while diligently practicing mindfulness of Amitabha Buddha. Repentance practice is often the 88 Buddhas Repentance service. The dilligent will often choose to bow with the name of each Buddha being said. It is good practice to help unbind one self of habits and increase merits and virtue. This special service is often done during holidays and a key part of mind training by recitations and bowing practice.

About The Author

Ven. Hong Yang is an American woman who is a fully ordained Bhikshuni in the Mahayana Chinese Buddhist tradition. She trained At the Xi Fang Temple in Brooklyn, NY. Xi Fang Temple is a Pure Land temple. She was sponsored for full ordination by her Abbbot Ven. Kuan Neng who sent her to Yuan Heng Temple in Taiwan after she was accepted to train for full ordination as a bhikshuni. She has been a translator of Buddhist sutras since she arrived at Xi Fang Temple finding nobody was able to translate into English the service she was memorizing. So she set out to carry out Ven. Master Lok To's wishes to update his translation and compilaton of the Buddhist Liturgy 1993 edition. She has worked on over 20 Buddhist Sutras, the Bhikshuni Pratimoksa, and services in the Chinese Buddhist tradition of the Mahayana school.
