In Kapitel 2 erfolgt zunächst die Auseinandersetzung mit den zentralen Begriffen und deren Bedeutung. Kapitel 3 geht aus theoretischer Sicht auf die Besonderheiten des Risikomanagements im Projektmanagement ein. Dabei werden auch die in der Praxis von KMUs eingesetzten Instrumente des Risikomanagements berücksichtigt und kurz beschrieben. Wer nicht bereit ist, etwas zu riskieren, kann nicht erwarten, definierte Ziele beziehungsweise Gewinne zu realisieren. Die Realisierung von Gewinnen - insbesondere die Maximierung von Gewinnen - bestimmt den Alltag von Unternehmen. Der Begriff Risiko wird im deutschen Sprachgebrauch mit potenziellen Nachteilen, Verlusten oder Schäden in Verbindung gebracht. Unternehmen müssen Risiken frühzeitig erkennen und steuernd eingreifen, um den Unternehmenserfolg sicherstellen zu können. Aus diesem Grund gewinnt das Risikomanagement im Zusammenhang mit einer globalisierten Wirtschaftswelt zunehmend an Bedeutung. Darüber hinaus kann Risikomanagement durch die bewusste Auseinandersetzung mit Chancen und Risiken im Rahmen von unternehmerischen Entscheidungen zum entscheidenden Wettbewerbsvorteil werden. RABL ist der Meinung, dass die zunehmende Komplexität und Dynamik des Wirtschaftslebens nur zwei der vielen Gründe darstellen, weshalb fast jedes Unternehmen in Projekten arbeitet. RABL führt weiter dazu aus, dass das Projektmanagement heute deshalb eine grundsätzliche Managementkompetenz ist. KRAUS/WESTERMANN weisen darauf hin, dass die Anzahl von Projekten in den Unternehmen kontinuierlich zunimmt und Projekte in sind.
