L'uso di fertilizzanti ad alto tenore, l'elevato assorbimento di zolfo da parte delle colture in regime intensivo e la mancata reintegrazione dello zolfo hanno contribuito a diffondere carenze di zolfo su vasta scala. Sono state segnalate carenze di zolfo in 72 paesi del mondo. Lo zolfo svolge un ruolo importante nella fissazione dell'azoto, influenzando la nodulazione attiva nei legumi e, nonostante il fabbisogno relativamente basso di zolfo del riso, la produttivit� di questi cereali di base pu� essere drasticamente ridotta da un apporto inadeguato di zolfo. Lo zolfo ha la capacit� di apportare benefici a pi� di una coltura in sequenza grazie alla sua significativa risposta residua. L'applicazione di dosi pi� elevate di fosforo (60 kg P₂O₅/ha) e l'aumento dei livelli di zolfo fino a 40 kg S/ha si sono dimostrati i migliori per migliorare la crescita, i caratteri che determinano la resa e la resa in granella del fagiolo mungo.
