Before Titanic, White Star had already known catastrophe.

In 1873, RMS Atlantic left Liverpool on a transatlantic voyage to North America. She was a modern steamship of her age, built for the White Star Line and carrying passengers, emigrants, crew, cargo, and the confidence of a company still building its reputation across the Atlantic.

Then coal became a problem.

Atlantic diverted toward Halifax, Nova Scotia, seeking fuel before continuing her voyage. In darkness, under a mistaken understanding of position, she approached the coast wrongly and struck the rocks near Mars Head. The ship had crossed most of the ocean only to be wrecked close to land.

What followed was one of the worst merchant shipwrecks of the nineteenth century. Water poured through the vessel. Passengers below decks were trapped. Steerage families, women, and children suffered devastating losses. Local rescuers saved those they could, but many were already beyond reach before organised help could matter.

RMS Atlantic: The White Star Disaster Before Titanic tells the full story of the wreck that haunted White Star decades before its most famous loss. It examines the final voyage, the coal diversion, the navigational failure, the nightmare below decks, the rescue from the rocks, the inquiry, the public outrage, and the disaster's later place in the shadow of Titanic.

This is a story of confidence before catastrophe, of emigrant hope destroyed before arrival, and of a company given an early warning about the cost of misplaced trust.

For readers of maritime history, shipwreck disasters, White Star Line history, Titanic-related history, and survival stories, RMS Atlantic is a forgotten disaster that deserves to be remembered.

Because before the iceberg, there was the coast.
