Leonardo Da Vinci - a painter, sculptor, engineer, scientist, inventor and writer - has been enshrined by posterity as the archetypal "renaissance man." Robert Hatcher Hoge, the son of a Baptist minister, was born in Jackson, GA, in the early years of the 20th Century. Hoge was also a pointer, sculptor, engineer, scientist, inventor, writer - and more. His friends considered him a modern renaissance man.
For 28 years, Bob Hoge was a well known Carmel Valley sculptor and painter, successful both artistically and commercially. In his later years he added poetry, essay writing and autobiography to his accomplishments. This led him to explore the career possibilities open to an author although he was already in his eighties.
Hoge radiated the aura of a corporation CEO, which he was for several years. He was also a blacksmith, a mechanic and engineer, a salesman and a company president. He also was a serious amateur astronomer and photographer.
Hoge, Madeline S.: - Madeline is the Founder of Belle-Hampton Consulting, a practice focused on working closely with Business Families around Governance best practices, long-term Success Mapping, and Generational Succession planning. She is the author of Sleeping in the Valley, a historical biography of prominent Virginia families. She is also a co-author of the children's book series, Can You Find, Did You Know under the pen name CJ Corki.
Hoge, Robert H.: - Robert Hatcher Hoge is often described as a renaissance man, a person who is skilled in multiple fields or multiple disciplines and has a broad knowledge base. At age 14, he hopped a train car running away from home, but was retrieved and returned to his family. His vocation started as a blacksmith, but Bob finished Virginia Tech in mechanical engineering after his father passed away. As a famed debater, it was said that he missed his calling by studying engineering. During the Great Depression, he was an executive in New York, where he also had an art studio. A homeless man who found shelter in the studio passed away, but Bob memorialized him with a ceramic bust before he was removed. After a long career with Clark Controls, Bob and his wife Marjorie moved to Carmel Valley, where he worked on his bronzes and paintings while Marjorie created pottery. Later in life, he also became a writer. This book is about his life story. Starting with his memories of growing up as the son of a preacher in Charleston, S.C., he reflects on a life well-lived.
