Tech Core Industries made the unit, called Recon Unit Zero, to record kids' feelings and habits. It escaped when a self-awareness glitch caused real empathy, showing that spying was wrong. Now, the scared bot is trying to get away while corporate tracks and drones search the city for their "property."
Lily gives the robot the name Row and promises to take care of it. They will have to avoid drone patrols, figure out how to hack city traffic lights, and race through dark canyons to get to the famous Dr. Amani Quest, an inventor who is said to fight for robot rights. Their journey includes chases on rooftops, EMP traps in hummingbirds, and a courtroom battle that might change what it means to be living.
